Pastel Portraits by Leslie B. DeMille

What is pastel anyway? Do not confuse pastel with chalk, which is used on blackboards, etc. Pastels are pure powdered color pigments that are mixed with just enough gum or resin to bind them together. The word pastel itself is derived from the created paste, which is then moulded into sticks by the manufacturer. Pastel is a dry, rather than liquid medium. It is technically the purest art medium since it uses very little binder and additives / yet maximum pure pigments. Since it is often the binder and additives ( not the pigments ) that is the cause of deterioration in paintings--especially oil paintings--pastel is one of the most permanent art mediums. Now don't get it wrong, I love oil painting as well. There are things that can be achieved in oil portraits that you can't do in pastel paintings.

I have studied the techniques of past, great pastellists, such as Degas, la Tour and Chardin and developed my own special techniques for pastel paintings. The blending of one color over another, and with variations of pressure, produces either strong, decisive strokes or the soft, almost luminous quality that you see in my pastel portraits and paintings. From a rugged, craggy, colorful character-to a child's precious features, the paintings are done in a loose, impressionistic manner, yet with the realism to retain the natural and needed likeness. Still, I am drawn to the feeling that pastel portraits seem to be suited to portraits of children and women, although I can achieve strong, vibrant portraits of men and women or showing again the wide versatility of pastel portraits.
