Oil Paintings by Leslie B. DeMille

Oil Paintings are a time-honored tradition going back many centuries. There is nothing more invigorating than to dig in to an oil painting with gusto, big brush strokes, impasto boldness and even palette knife. Then there is the opposite; the soft, delicate layering of transparent colors over one another, creating that thin layering of flesh tones, for instance, in a child's face or an elderly woman's milk-white features. Of course, these is but two of the many techniques for painting with oils. There is a wonderful feeling to be able to express such a variety of emotions in an oil painting using big, big brushes and working down to the finer brushes for small details. A lot of the paintings that I do are of character studies of many different nationalities.

Some of the paintings are of such strong characters that they cry out to be painted with the bold, impressionistic strokes and strong colors, mixed with subtleties of colors, along with lost and found edges (strong edges to accent an area-and soft, receding edges that blend one area into another). Then there are oil paintings that require a gentle touch, such as some painted clouds or a mother and child or a subtle landscape painting, etc. These are the painting methods that make a painting sparkle and look alive, not the photographic copies with weak mundane colors and edges that lack professionalism. If you are looking at my paintings with the idea of purchasing, hopefully, you will see what I am trying to achieve and that you will relate to them with the same feelings that I have described above.
